At Little Dolphins Day Nursery our Key workers plan daily/weekly activities to cover all areas of development according to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Our planning is done according to each child’s individual needs and development.


The EYFS learning and development requirements comprise of

Communication and Language

  • Encourage children to develop their confidence
  • Give them opportunities to express themselves through talking, listening, hearing and interacting during story time, songs and rhymes
  • Familiarise themselves with books, how to handle books, learn and enjoy the stories and pictures

Physical Development

  • Providing opportunities for all children to be active indoors and outdoors
  • Encourage development of gross and fine motor skills, coordination and control and how to handles toys and equipment safely and sensibly
  • Understand the meaning of being healthy and the importance of physical activity and how to look after their own Health & Hygiene

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  • Develop self-confidence and self awareness to communicate their feelings and ideas and make particular choices
  • Manage feelings, emotions and behaviour and show an understanding of why certain behaviour is unacceptable
  • Making relationships and interact with other children and play co-operatively and take turns, form positive relationships with other children and adults alike and express their own feelings and respect the feelings of others



  • All children learn to read and understand word recognition by exploring books
  • Use phonics to help recognise words
  • Show an understanding of what has been read
  • Learn to write common simple words and basic sentences using their phonic knowledge


  • Through a variety of practical activities learn the basis of early maths such as: counting, matching, sequencing, sorting. Can count reliably from 0 - 20
  • Learn, by themselves and by working together with others, different mathematical vocabulary such as: volume, size, position, shape, number, weight. Explores shapes and patterns
  • Use a variety of fun activities to encourage children’s awareness of mathematics with songs, picture books, games
  • Develop their early addition and subtraction skills

Understanding the World

  • Children are assisted in exploring and understanding their environment, and explore the world around them
  • Use of computers, phones, stereos, TV and other programmable devices to help further their knowledge of various technology
  • Participate in different festivals throughout the year relating to their own and other cultures

Expressive Arts and Design

  • Explores what happens during messy play with a variety of materials, tools and techniques. Experimenting with colours and textures
  • Role play and imaginative play through their own ideas and what they have seen and experienced
  • Joins in with music and dance activities


Working in partnership with parents is a vital part of the EYFS and very important to us at Little Dolphins Day Nursery. We always want our parents / carers to feel very much a part of their child’s time within the nursery and have as much input as possible.
